Are Mosquitoes In Corfu Dangerous? 2026 Visitors Guide
Want to keep safe from mosquitoes during your Corfu trip?
I’m your gal! đââď¸
The mosquitoes in Corfu are not exactly dangerous – but if you aren’t prepared they sting like hell and leave you with some nasty bites đł
My family visit Corfu at least twice a year and one thing we have learnt is how to prepare and repeal any unwanted insects during our stay.
To help you avoid being eaten alive, I have put everything you need to know (including my top ways to prevent being bitten) in this guide.
Quick Guide Summary:
Don’t go to Corfu without preparing for Mozzies. There is a seriously high chance you will get bitten!
Here are some easy ways you can stay safe on your trip (that work):
â Avoid wearing perfume
â Don’t wear tight-fitting clothing
â Avoid leaving windows open or air-con on for extended periods
â Use repellent– DEET or my go-to option!
â Stay in accommodation with tight shutting windows
â Treat bites quickly
So Are The Mosquitoes In Corfu Dangerous?

Just like Greek Sharks, I have never personally had a dangerous experience with Corfu mosquitoes.
But ouch, the mozzie bites are something else! đł
However, mosquitoes can carry diseases (don’t worry this is rare in Greece).
The Greek Ministry of Health advise that keeping away from stagnent water and being prepared will help protect you from the infections mosquitoes can carry from the West Nile, Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya viruses.
Do You Need Bug Spray For Corfu?

Yup, make sure you include some sort of insect repelent on your packing list– you’ll need it!
There are loads of options out there but from experience, you don’t need the full blown DEET unless you are camping or near stagnant water for long periods of time.
I personally don’t love using DEET. I find the chemical smell over-powering and it doesn’t feel great on my skin.
That’s why I always use this Goldie from Amazon! đ¤Š
It wasn’t created as a repelent but boy does it do the job. It also soothes my skin and doesn’t stink so that’s another few ticks from me!
No matter if you prefer full blown DEET, repellent wipes or anything else, just make sure you take some sort of bug spray or product to Corfu.
âď¸THIS is the bug spray I ALWAYS pack for Corfu. Get Yours RIGHT HERE before it sells out for the summer! âď¸
Are There Mosquitoes In Other Parts Of Greece?

Yes â mosquitoes arenât just hanging out in Corfu. Youâll find them across mainland Greece and the islands too.
Places like Crete, Rhodes, Athens, and even the quieter inland villages all get their fair share, especially in the warmer months.
Itâs usually worse near still water or in leafy, humid areas (think rivers, lakes, and overly lush gardens). So keep this in mind if you are visiting animals, farms or hiking in forests.
The good news is, theyâre not unique to Corfu â so if youâve been to another Greek destination and managed fine, youâll likely be just as fine here.
Can You Get Ill From Mosquito Bites In Greece?
It’s rare to get ill after being bitten by mosquitoes in Greece, including Corfu.
However, it can happen if it’s a nasty bite or infection is being carried by the mozzie.
Bites can impact people differently. The symptoms can vary from itching and blusters to more serious symptoms like a fever.
That’s why it’s super important to know how to avoid Mosquito bites in Corfu and how to treat them.
Luckily, I have only got red bumps and itchy skin when any insect has bitten me. But if you get a bad rash, feel sick or can’t breathe, seek medical attention.
What To Do If Youâve Been Bitten By A Mosquito In Corfu
First off, donât panic â most mosquito bites in Corfu are completely harmless, just annoyingly itchy.
If you do get bitten (and letâs face it, chances are you will at least once), wash the area with soap and water, pat it dry, and try not to scratch it â I know, easier said than done.
A dab of antihistamine cream or bite relief like After Bite or Anthisan will help calm the itching.
đ Tip: If you forget this, you can easily buy it in a local pharmacy. But if you are looking for a certain product, it may be worth getting a Bus or Uber to Corfu Town!
If you donât have those to hand, a cold compress or even a dab of vinegar or aloe vera gel can do the trick.
If youâre anything like me and mozzies love you, keep insect repellent handy, sleep with a fan on (they hate a breeze), and wear loose long sleeves in the evenings.
Is There A Bug Season In Corfu?
Yes â sort of. Like most warm, sunny places, Corfu does have a âbuggierâ time of year, usually between late spring and early autumn (May to September).
Thatâs when the weather is warmest, thereâs more humidity, and everyoneâs outside enjoying sunset dinners⌠which also happens to be when the mozzies decide itâs their dinner time too.
That said, itâs not like youâre walking into a jungle.
Most of the time, a bit of insect repellent and maybe a citronella candle on the balcony is all you need. Mosquitoes are the main culprit â not swarms of terrifying creatures.
You might spot the odd wasp or ant (especially near sweet drinks and snacks- I saw ants carrying a piece of toast before đ), but itâs all very manageable.
Are Corfu’s Mosquitoes Dangerous? Final Thoughts
So, are mosquitoes in Corfu dangerous? Not really â just annoying.
Theyâre not carrying anything sinister, but their bites can be a bit itchy and irritating if youâre not prepared.
The good news is that with a decent repellent, some light cover-up in the evenings (there are plenty of shops if you need one), and maybe a plug-in for your room, youâll barely notice them.
Donât let the mozzies put you off â Corfu is far too beautiful to be worrying about a few bites.
Just come prepared and then forget about it â youâve got sunsets to watch and beaches to explore.

Very numerous and insistent wasps in September 25- one even followed me around in the swimming pool. No fun outside eating till after sunset- then it’s just the mozzies; I have a few bites to show for that, which do not itch but don’t look good!
Oh my gosh that’s crazy!I know they get bad in September but not that bad. I hope them bites healed quickly, I know what a pain they are đŤŁ
